I believe there were some BT engineering problems which affected some ADSL
customers (nice of BT to tell us in advance...), but unfortunately I was
out most of the day so couldn't monitor things. When I got home, I noticed
that my own router had disconnected though, so I'm guessing whatever it was
affected quite a few exchanges. It was all reconnected when I got back so
I'm not sure how long the outage was for.

However, this shouldn't have affected dialup - which I checked a couple of
times whilst I was out anyway - hence me not spotting anything wrong until
I got home and found the DSL problems.

Er...I beg to differ, yer honour. I'm on dialup and I was MOST DEFINITELY
affected - ie I got **** all connection for about 2 hours!!

The ADSL problem wasn't anything to do with dialup, and completely
independent.

I did try dialup at approx 9.15am, 10am and 11am (from Dorchester) and
everything was working fine.

Dial-up on Orpheus was totally down around 4:30am, when I was only able
to (twice) do an actual log-in. By 1:30pm it was all working okay.

For me, dialup failed at the authentication stage - just sat there doing
nothing until the 'authentication took too long' error was generated.

All back to normal later, though, so no problem.

No problem? Orpheus just failed AGAIN!

This time it logged on and authenticated, but then crashed in mail fetch.

If you see this post, Orpheus worked again 10 minutes later, but that
does so not make this situation a "so no problem".

Please don't blame Orpheus for a failure of your individual line and/or
software.

Orpheus has been working perfectly ALL evening. I've been constantly
testing it here and there are/have been absolutely no problems whatsoever.

That sounds like Voyager being temporamental. Have you tried using
alternative software such as POPstar?

When this problem was first noted I lost broad band for a few hours and
the PPP light on the router did not light. ADSL light was OK.
Everything normal now.

I believe some BT exchanges had a problem first thing Sunday morning, but
everything should have been ok from around 11am Sunday.

Everything has been working correctly since Sunday afternoon. I've been
closely monitoring things from here, and there were no problems at all, all
day Monday or yesterday.

If anyone is still experiencing problems please contact support and I shall
investigate on an individual basis.

Actually I did have a problem accessing the web yesterday afternoon,
on ADSL. (Maybe I'm writing to the wrong NG?) I use Pluto and Netfetch
for mail/NGs, but the dreaded Windows IE to browse, and it couldn't
even find the BBC.

It's happened before several times, and with a bit of patience it
usually clears up within an hour or so. The problem is when it's an
urgent matter.

If you dread IE, why not download Firefox and / or Opera?

Much nicer browsers, and Firefox certainly is generally
reckoned to be significantly more secure. Recommended by the
German Federal Office for IT; IE is notable by its abscence
from the German list.

OK - there are some sites that only work as intended in IE,
but most of the time you will not need to use it.

I'll confess that I still haven't found time to install it and set it
up (it's the latter that puts me off).

You can find a freebie copy on most of the CDs and DVDs that are
attached to computer magazines. I /think/ it's labelled
Mozilla:Firefox, and usually found in the vast list of extras listed
on the back rather than vaunted on the front. At least I hope that's
what I've got!

There is no setting up - it runs immediately you have
installed it.

It will import your IE bookmarks if you want it to.

Go on, you /know/ it makes sense.
:-)

You may want to configure it to the way you want it, but
that is true of much software.
