Orpheus seems to have vanished, no web site, hosted sites also
missing, and email is nonfunctionable.

Whether this news item gets through remains to be seen.

Voice message on the answer phone says everything is working normally.

smtp seems OK, I have had no problems send e-mail all day,
but not getting any back since lunch.

News seems to be working, and here I can send but not collect mail,
and, as Adrian says, none of the Orpheus sites will come though. All
other sites working, as far as I can tell.

And, of course, we can't see the status page. :-(

With best wishes,

Peter.

The status page is also mirrored on my own server at
http://www.vigay.com/orpheus/ - for emergency use.

Unfortunately, I don't go out of the office hardly at all, but the one time
I pop out for a couple of hours you can guarantee things will go wrong five
minutes later.

It looks like we suffered a sustained denial of service attack from
spammers - our servers are currently battling with having 150,000 spam
messages sent to them every day! :-(

Unfortunately, the primary mail server decided that it wanted to
temporarily have a rest and decided to shut off some of the services!

I'm currently looking to invest in some more servers (which is a pain
because it's an expense I could have done without!) which will divide the
load and also avoid the web server getting overloaded as a knock-on effect
of the mail server getting overloaded.

In the meantime, I'm closely monitoring the servers and keeping an eye on
things - and I'm not intending to leave the office much!

Apologies for the unexpected downtime, but it looks like it only lasted a
couple of hours - according to my monitoring log here, it looked like it
died at 2.22pm and I got back into the office at 4pm and fixed everything

I figured something like this was going on. I subscribe to a forum hosted
by Invision and it is a good bet they had similar prob's awhile ago,
although the Forum admin' didn't state this was the case. Maybe it was
something on the same server that was attacked.

Do you know who perpetrated this DoS attack, prob' from China.

I have been having many other prob's of late due to those d'hds in
Redmond killing my wireless adaptor driver (been slowly degrading it
since last Oct'. Bouncing between MS and Belkin tech' is no fun. MS
support suggested rolling back all updates since SP2. So their much
vaunted AutoUpdate routine (which annoys with warnings if turned off) is
now broken if it cannot be trusted to update without breaking things.

Thanks for all your efforts.

PS I take it you got my recent cheque for renewal?

Have also been having SCSI troubles (not to mention having a stair lift
fitted for mother-in-law who came to stay after being chucked out of a
nursing home (played up a bit), so that she could recover from a broken
pelvis. So we were then a cross between a nursing home and a kindergarten.

Bunch of unmentionable, wotnot scumbags!! (that's being polite). I know
who's been doing some attacks - see my personal 'blog' at
http://www.paulsdomain.co.uk/?ref=20060609 so I've firewalled my personal
server against their individual IP address.

However, after a very heavy and sustained attack on the Orpheus servers
yesterday, my sysadmin made a bit of a discovery, in that one particular
bunch of unmentionables have been issuing the main mail server at Orpheus
with a DoS attack.

They're 80.248.224.34 which resolves to void.ettnet.se (Sweden) so they're
now blocked off, so hopefully people might see a resuming of normal
service. We've also got three new servers arriving next week, so things
will get better anyway because we'll have more power to implement even
better anti-spam measures.

Quite frankly, I've noticed none of these hassles, the service seems to
be running nice & smoothly... no doubt thanks to you, Paul.

Mail and websites seem to be OK now (1614h). What happened?

Still seems to be all OK ..at 01h.16 on 07 July...

Nothing missing here that I know of, except one
email that remained unposted - now successfully
completed.

Echo thanks to the Almighty Ra ..err ..Paul, for
immediate attention to detail..

than the 'puter under the volcano in Star Trek I).
It accepts cash and bank transfer donations, as
well as Fortnum and Mason food parcels).. ;))
