Rep0eated download(s)

Returning from the SW Show I set up my machines again and looked at what
had turned up during my two day absence. There was the usual crop of
email, including ZFC stuff (that for reasons unknown decided long ago to
put itself into the Misc box), as do some other emails on a seemingly
random basis ???

The first download went on for a long time (by my standards), and after
about 10 minutes I decided to break the connection. Pluto debatched the
stuff OK and I read the mails and News. Today I did another download.
This time I gave up after about 12 minutes, with the modem lights (I
think all of them) still firmly alight. Debatched as normal, to find
most - perhaps all - of the emails were duplicates of yesterday's batch.

Oddly, the Voyager's News log showed "No new articles are available",
but continued with "News fetch completed", and indeed Pluto debatched
plenty of items from several groups. What had deceived the log report I
wonder?

In the emails were two that contained large attachments, mostly JPEGs,
only some of which my RPC + SwiftJPEG was able to handle.

Did my impatience in aborting the download cause this double download or
was it these unusual attachments? Or something else perhaps.

I've forgotten how to use Webload or I'd try that. It was a standard
procedure (the only on that worked) for months together a couple of
years ago or so. Don't want to have to repeat that, believe me!

I'd welcome an explanation or preferably a cure.

Thanks

Robin

With truly bad etiquette I'm adding to what I hope posted a short while
ago. The News lamp on Voyager is red, and the news download locked
after 7 things were supposed to have been downloaded, Pluto debatching
none, though. This last download I eventually gave up after 21 minutes.
There was an email that was 2.7Mb in size! Couldn't even read it
because of a strange (to me) format. I suspect that there may be
another still waiting. Anyway, I got yet another repeat of a load of
emails, some very large ones, so have three copies of the lot now :-((

I'm just about to go on line again, sending this News items and an email
to the perpetrator of the 2.7 Mb file, saying "Cease and desist".

I guess I still need to try Webmail, so pleas advise. My memory is
failing :-((

Thanks,

Robin

Just goto http://webmail.orpheusnet.co.uk/ and follow the prompts.
You'll need your POP Username and your POP password, which Paul
gave you when you signed up with Orpheusnet.

If you break off your dialup connection for any reason, you must
wait a decent interval before trying again; or, you'll get another
repeat download of the same files with very large attachments,
which caused the problem in the first place.

Using Webmail, <delete> all the files you've "seen" before;
then quit webmail, and do another download.

As I understand it, E&OE.

I think (though I may be wrong) that you are confusing two
things here, Ben.

It does sometimes happen (I forget the exact circumstances)
that when a connection is broken beofre everything is
downloaded, then the mailbox remains locked for about 10
minutes, meaning that it is impossible to log in again at
that time.

I am certain, though, that if you break off the download,
you will always get everything again if you use the old
Voyager POP transfer software.

Once each mail item is downloaded it is normally marked for
deletion. But the actual delete command is only given when
the download is complete. If you break off, the download is
not complete, so stuff is not deleted.

POPStar avoids this to some extent by downloading in chunks,
which you can, yourself, configure. Deleteion takes place
after each chunk.

anything is unclear or could be described in more detail.
