Discussion:
Spam Mail
(too old to reply)

I recently received two e-mail messages for returned mail and not having
sent any was dubious so did not read them the normal way but extracted them
so I could look at them safely (presumably).

They both turned out to be false and were from the same person (Polina),
said to be looking for a man.

This is new to me - is it the same for all or have I been lucky to date?

You've just been lucky to date, Peter! :))

I presently get up to around 50 or these a day at the
moment, from hundreds a day not so long ago. There
are others, Steve (Pampling) for a start, who probably
receive thousands of the these a day.. and Paul, of
course, fends off multi-mega loads a day, if not hourly!

You'll spot the ones to ignore very quickly. All I do,
(DSL), is block and delete the lot immediately. You won't
lose anything, except a fascinatingly fatal curiosity.

If using a dial-up modem - and many around here still do
- where the download speed is a little slower and with each
download charged - then it might be as well to get into your
webmail box and delete from there, before downloading into
your machine...

Paul no doubt will add a comment, but he does have in
place many systems, revised daily or hourly as needed,
to destruct all this spam and assorted rubbish before
it gets to our boxes..

Steve, as others around here, are also very competent and
knowledgeable about the various onboard spam destructors
that you can install should you feel you need to..

hh :))

Thank you Bill for your comments - I get a few spams daily but had never had
one on returned e-mails. I usually spot the spams quite easily but this was
new to me. I have as yet to go Broadband but will do so in the course of
time but have no plans to have my machine on full time.

Regards,
Peter

You are wise, Peter! Just imagine what it would be like
with a similar torrent of paper piling through the front
door.. ;))

It may be that someone, (often a Microsoft Windows user),
has a machine that's spewing out junk unknowingly; a
machine with an 'open-link' ..so it might be an idea
to have a quick word with Paul - if he doesn't drop into
this very shortly... ?

I'm sure he'll tweak the spam trap a little tighter for
your connection. However, he can only do so much before
interfering with your secure mail etc. He's aware that
you will not want to lose the very stuff you need.

I know you will already appreciate this, but present
problems solved or abated and thinking for the future,
you will notice the immense difference when you do
manage to get Broadband. It's almost as if the World
has just become another harddrive.. ;))

As you plan to, I don't leave my machine on all the time,
either.

However, following Paul's experienced techie advice, I
do now leave my router on permanently - that's the box
of tricks that takes over from the modem, (which is now
relegated to a rare fax only role, although it still
remains as a backup). It's been reliably up and running
for a couple of years now.

The router, once it's found an end line, dialled itself
in and has checked the connects, the server net at the
other and has formally secured it's dsl connection, is
then quite happy just sitting there, as a small and low
powered computer, guarding and sorting your gateway,
independently of your machine and 365.25/24/7.. :))

Broadband ..adsl ..dsl, whatever, is designed to be an
'always on' connection - the router maintains this without
fuss. Your line, the databases, Google et al are at your
fingertips as you switch your machine on. :)) It's a
revelation!

Anyway ..good luck with getting rid of the rubbish. It
really is both annoying and a great pity ..there's always
one more idiot to fill any gap that appears in chaotic
melee of the benighted..

hh :))
